At this time of the year, the fly fishing guides are playing chicken with the water levels; their little stretch of heaven’s fishable today, but may not be after tomorrow’s warm weather — so where do you take the clients?
The Upper Sacramento flows are rising, but according to Steve Bertrand, the water isn’t spilling over the Box Canyon Dam (yet). As soon as it does, the Upper Sac will become — as Wayne Eng puts it — an "awkward river."
And with the McCloud flows shortly headed upward for testing, fly fishermen are casting their trout-hungry eyes all over the map in a search for weekend water.
