An interesting piece, but full of so many sensational (and untrue) claims that makes me question the entire article. I’ll just list one:
<<>>
If SB thinks a used $700 rod will fetch $500 on Looneybay, well good luck. While the Ebay angle will help Leland in the short term, I suspect once the customer figures out how little they will get for their old rod, this program will come crashing down. I give kudo’s to Leland for their smart marketing, but I doubt that this will be a long term winner for Leland when the customer realizes he only got $200 (and quite likely less) for that $700 rod. And possibly a pissed off customer in the process also.

Bob,
I don’t think he was saying your used rod would go for $500 of ebay, the way I read it was-

Say you go to Leland’s looking for a new rod. The one you like is $700. Leland’s takes your old rod and sells it for you, for $200 on ebay. Now instead of paying $700 for that new rod, you’re only writing a check to Leland’s for $500.

Daytripper is correct, most of the Leland sales are around $200 for the old rod - giving the owner an extra $200 towards the purchase of the new tackle

I am an admiring observer of this interesting conversation about getting good deals on ebay.

Boys and Girls,

When all of the “real” fly shops are gone, it’ll be time to start building the arc.
