Don’t Forget: It’s "Kiss Milltown Dam Good-Bye" Day (11:30 MT)

by Tom Chandler on March 28, 2008 · 6 comments

Intrepid Underground Director of Seismic Environmental Events and Wanton Thrillseeker Sully will be present at the blessed event: the breaching of Milltown Dam.

(He’ll be on the bluffs on the far side of the river from the Web camera).

Milltown Dam breaching

I don’t know why they don’t organize these events as fundraisers; instead of tamely breaching the dam with heavy equipment, why not auction seats at the bombardier’s station of a B-52?

There — for a hefty added fee — you could even stencil your own message on a "dumb" bomb and push the button to drop it on the dam (the Underground votes for "Dam this, baby.").

Figure a dozen bombs would do the job at a nice, round $20K a bomb. Yeah, we’re talking revenue.

Once again, the Underground leads the way in innovative, environmentally related fundraising concepts.

You can watch it happen (10:30 PT, 11:30 MT) by clicking here.

The site must be getting pounded. The camera isn’t showing up for me anymore.

I’m looking at the 12:16 picture, and that looks like flowing water to me.

The “time-lapse” cam (in the right sidebar) returns a 404 error, but hopefully they’ll load that baby up with images of the breaching.

I’d keep checking.

Back from the event. It was more historically significant than awe inspiring; basically water pouring down a large ditch, but still glad I attended.

It was the biggest thing to hit Missoula since the Stones played here and largely attended by the same group of aging hippy sympathizers who caught that show. We common folk identified Governor Schweitzer (he caught the Stones, too) from across the river by his jeans and free-ranging Australian Shepherd, Jag. Times like this it feels good to live here.

I like Tom’s idea with the bombs, maybe we could paint certain political figures caricatures on them too! The round pointy end would be a natural fit our presidents propeller head…lots of other possibilities there too!
