Hey, might want to do some research before you post an article with that photo. What you have in that picture is a GREEN SUNFISH not a bluegill. They are great fish to catch, almost like a bluegill but with the mouth of a bass. You can tell by the size of the mouth and the light blue rays on it's gill plate. I'd be perfectly happy catching these all day.

This is a great post, especially the photo of the fish in hand. It's still frozen up here in Duluth, MN, but I'll be panfishing off the Boy Scout landing soon enough (with a fiberglass Phillipson, of course).

Yeah, I'm guilty of lumping them all together. And besides, the "<a href="http://troutunderground.com/2007/06/01/top-northern-california-fishery-now-reserved-for-wealthy-undergrounders-need-not-apply/" rel="nofollow">Mount Eddy Executive Green Sunfish Ranch</a>" just doesn't sing.

Often found in the same waters and also not native west of the Rockies are Green Sunfish. Your photo is not a bluegill. Cut my teeth on Green Sunfish as a kid in Walnut Creek (the actual creek). A bluegill, for one, would be hard to lip land BUT seriously, it's a minor technicality. Maybe you already know all of this and don't care - in a good kind of way. In the end: tome and panfish are starting to call my name too. Go get 'em and thanks for the fun shot!

I think the spoof film idea would be a knockout but for now you can wear your appreciation for the "sunny" on your back with an original t-shirt from Patagonia by fly designer and artist, Tim Borski, the Perch and Sunfish T-Shirt captures the spirit of the species that got most of us started. You can <a href="http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/product_focus.jsp?OPTION=PRODUCT_FOCUS_DISPLAY_HANDLER&style_color=59763-589&ws=false&patcatcode=SEARCH.SEARCH_TERM:PERCH_AND_SUNFISH" rel="nofollow">see it here</a>

Sorry about the goose shit, TC... I would have never suspected that Fred and Ethyl [sic] could produce that much excrement! Glad to see that the Bluegill, at least 2 of 'em, made it through this winter.

I'm green w/ envy Tom. Looks like you got to fish the Mt. Eddy Executive Bluegill Ranch again, damnit.
It's on my short list of places I want to fish before I die.

Gotta love bluegills, especially on a 4/5 wt. bamboo.

Don't know about the Hollywood soft hackle though- kinda reminds me of a plastic grocery bag wrapped on a hook. I think the bluegill deserve something a bit more organic.

And Adam, if you think there are too many, eat a bunch.

Tom, I've been checking your site once in a while, probably a result of the cane content. Always interesting and fun.

Best,

Rick

Alright, bluegills are the cockroaches of the aquatic world. When I fished the Brandywine River in Delaware over one summer, the damn bluegills kept getting my fly before the bass could.

Spoof? You've elevated my pulse. My first fish on a fly rod were Bluegill on farm ponds in Kentucky. Number 12 foam rubber spiders with rubber band legs did the trick nicely.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Pound for pound, Bluegill are the hardest fighting fish in North America. Who the hell is John Gierach, anyway?

Yes, I know. Frankly, modern fishporn is ripe for a good spoof, but sadly, I lack a digital video camera.

A mock "extreme" vid with "a lot of fist pumps and layer a rock music soundtrack over your average bluegill footage" would be brilliant.
