New Fly Rod & Reel Managing Editor Leaves After A Few Months
By Tom Chandler on Feb 1, 2008 in News
In a short e-mail sent today, Fly Rod & Reel magazine’s Managing Editor Jim Reilly announced he was already in his last days as Managing Editor of the magazine. This announcement comes only a few months after long-time editor Paul Guernsey left the magazine.
It’s likely the two departures are unrelated, but yes, I’m bummed — Reilly seemed genuinely interested in breaking out of the "Gear and Places to Go" rut inhabited by so many other fly fishing magazines.
I’ve always felt Fly Rod & Reel stood out from the crowd with its publication of Ted Williams’ environmental columns — despite the fact it costs them subscribers and advertising dollars.
One hopes Fly Rod & Reel will continue to publish Williams, and that they bring their online presence up to snuff (a recent "makeover" of the FR&R Web site created a real online mess, though it was begun prior to Reilly’s tenure, so I’m not laying it at his feet).
As readership moves online, it’ll be interesting to see how the mainstream magazines adapt.
See you in the magazine aisle, Tom Chandler

I bet he couldn’t stand reading it either

I am wondering what is up with the management of that place to run two editors off in such a short time. Suits who don’t know anything about flyfishing I am sure.

I spoke to Reilly today; nothing sinister at work. He just wanted to do other things, and in fact, the bastard’s taking a monthlong trip to warmer climes, and without inviting me along.
