Rusty Hook: Update, October 2009:The AFFTA show is long gone. Now the trade association is a sponsor of the ISE show, which used to take place in late January, and has now moved to the same weekend as the Fly Fishing Show. What an odd coincidence…

Could I ask where you got the news? This is indeed a blogworthy item.

"What happens when an industry association goes head-to-head with a company in its own industry?"

Anyone with half a brain steers well clear of it and goes fishing or takes a nap.

As long as each show wasn't offering all the same vendors the other one has it could possibly work out. Although ideally, it would be just one giant show. I wouldn't travel far to visit a trade show. But if there are two shows so I get more bang for my gas mileage, I might consider it, although ideally it would be just one giant show.

I'd guess whichever show has the best deals for the consumer will win. Word will get out that one or the other has gear at better prices, and that one will outlast the other, although maybe at a lower profit-or even a loss-to it's vendors/promoter. Then the loser will move elsewhere and the winner can go back to business as usual.

Ethan: Unfortunately, the AFFTA already runs a retailer-only trade show in Denver in September, so this is clearly a consumer gig aimed at pretty much the same crowd attending Furimsky's party.

Even in fly fishing tradition-rich Denver, I don't think two consumer shows can co-exist for long -- at least not on the same weekend...

Perhaps what will happen is, one will become a more consumer focused and one will become more industry focused. It sounds like the FFR is geared toward fisherman actually buying and demo-ing gear (consumers) and the AFFTA is more backed by the trade association (manufacturers business owners etc.)

If you look at it like that there may be room for both. However if you make a small pie into two smaller pies, the pieces get pretty small. And fly fishing is a small pie to begin with.
