Help Design the Gravel Guards on Patagonia’s New Waders

by Tom Chandler on November 7, 2007

Except for the uncontrollable, homicidal rage that surfaces whenever my fly line snags in those damned-to-hell metal boot hooks, I don’t give gravel guards much thought.

How about you? Straq at Way Upstream (fly fishing product guy at Patagonia) is looking for feedback about gravel guards, which is either intelligent product development, or a cagey way to get us to do his job for him.

Sure, Bennet says Straq’s a total slacker, but we’ll give Straq the benefit of a doubt, and suggest you head on over and post an opinion.

From Way Upstream:

A while ago I posted a request for wader feedback that was widely commented on. Since then I’ve been working on the new wader development and have a specific area for the Way Upstream community to focus and comment on. This area is the gravel guard. I’m testing various fabrics, high filtration mesh and neoprene for this integrated feature.

That’s Bennett….and Straq is still a slacker.

I know Straq from his days here on the east coast with Patagonia…..slacker is quite the opposite description for this guy….rest assured he already has new designs that he has been working on…I think it’s great he is asking for input from the people using the product….that is what keeps them on top of their game…..maybe this is a ploy to cover him while he is out fishing….slacker…

Bennett: How do you know I didn’t mean my great-uncle Joe Bennet?

Mike: I vote for “out fishing” while the rest of us slave over “his” new designs. That would explain him showing up in half of Patagonia’s fly fishing pictures.

Hell, he probably flies to all those fly fishing places in a black helicopter.

So maybe he’s not just a slacker. Maybe he’s one of them.

You heard it here first.

Tom,

You know, A.J. McClane was “one of them”, which accounts for his access to great fishing in countries mysteriously undergoing political unrest. He was still the best fishing writer of his era and, I’m told, a wonderful gentleman both onstream and off.

I know Straq personally….and he’s a total slacker…..except when he fishes.

Seriously, I appreciate the comments, opinions and ribbing.
