FFR Stuff That Rocks: The Tibor SpeedHandle

Here’s another in a series of product reports from the FFR show — the great stuff that should get attention, but probably won’t.

In this case, I’m hedging a bit; the Tibor SpeedHandle probably will get a fair amount of attention, but face it — this is hardly the first time you’ve been lied to by the media.

Still, the SpeedHandle’s ingenious, and that’s enough for the Underground.

Essentially, Tibor’s added a second handle to the spool closer to the center axis. Turning the inside handle instead of the outermost handle speeds your retrieve by as much as one-third (at the expense of power).

Available as an option, it’ll be interesting to see if the SpeedHandle becomes standard issue on large arbor saltwater reels, or simply a better way to mash your knuckles on a fast-moving bonefish or tarpon.

Bets, anyone?

Will this invention enable me to tangle my loose fly line around the handle twice as fast?

    Exactly. That’s progress for you.

Perfect. As if there weren’t enough moving parts already! It looks like a bare knucklebones bet to me.

Time will be the ultimate test. I admit it’s an interesting idea; it’s a very simply way to solve a fairly significant line retrieval problem.

The question revolves around whether it introduces more problems than it solves.
