[UPDATE: There have been a couple complaints about this video playing every time the Underground comes up, so I did away with the Quicktime player and switched to the YouTube version.
In fly fishing, timing is everything. That's why -- when the Undergrounders fire up a discussion on the state of fly fishing videos -- it's not that surprising when one shows up to make the discussion a wee bit more interesting:
I’ll write a longer review of Fishizzle when I get the DVD back from a recuperating Chris Raine (I watched it on my laptop in the Denver airport — not exactly the place to concentrate).
For now, I’ll post the trailer, and let you tell me: is this standard fare, or a “young guy” fly fishing video — complete with fish porn, soundtrack and all the requisite hero shots — that also knows how to poke fun at itself (Wooligans?).See you at the candy counter, Tom Chandler.

I thought the trailer was pretty funny.

Tom,
I thought this was a great video and certainly not your typical fish porn. I thnk Steve Apple might just be on to something.

I agree. I just didn’t want to write the big review without seeing the thing again. I think it’s interesting and different…

I wouldn’t call it a young guy movie, I think it’s “progressive” – definately not standard though…there’s music in the background, and good music too, inspiring music, not fiddles and shit which transitions to the sleep inducing whisper/rumble of a stream and the monotonous drab of the guide or host…so definately not standard.

It’s fishing…that thing you do when you wish to escape the noise and clamor of an everyday hardscrabble existence.
It’s not edgy, and you don’t get a lightsaber, nor will you kiss the Princess after a successful outing.
It’s marginal to watch and really fun to do. Unglue thine buttocks from the couch, and go get you some.

Is anyone experiencing problems playing the video? It worked fine for me, but I don’t think QuickTime’s the friendliest player for FireFox, and a few people are reporting issues (perhaps related to memory).

kabarton: I’m afraid I’m directing a raspberry in your general direction. Nobody fishes 24 hours a day, and while fishing comes first, I’d never suggest not reading McGuane, Gierach or Leeson when the option is a reality game show.
The literature of the sport — whether written or video — is worth a little discussion.
Besides, not everyone is lucky enough to have world-class brownlining right out their door…

Point taken.
I find it somewhat funny that we look for things in a fishing video that we despise while fishing.
Fish are part of the equation, the environs they’re found in are the rest of the attraction. If someone is playing a Van Halen cut loudly in the parking lot, you are grinding your teeth – but in a fishing video it’s not edgy enough?
I just find it amusing. I will admit that fishing is a poor viewing sport – much of the detail is too small for the camera to pick up. At most we get a hook set, followed by trout-augmented-phallic pose, nice – but not academy award material.
The soundtrack or the use of pastel colors juxtaposed on 1950′s architecture? Nice.
Books are wonderful, I have hundreds of them – we are agreed. It was the video discussion that caught my attention.

Just watched this, and thought it was pretty damn fun, and not your typical fare. The spoof on Filson was hilarious and the chinook footage was killer. Recommended.

Fishporn only goes so far, so having a little fun with the outdoor industry was a hell of a bonus.
Of course, you bastard, you reminded me I never posted a full-sized review of Fishsizzle.
One more for the pile…
