The Trout Underground Gone Wild! (Heading For Fly Fishing Retailer Show)
By Tom Chandler on Aug 31, 2007 in Underground Entertainment
If the surfing dogs weren’t a clear sign of apocalypse, then this news must be: come September 15, the Trout Underground is packing his bags and heading for the Fly Fishing Retailer Show in Denver.

Once there, I plan to drink browse my way through the show, staggering and soiling myself carefully reporting on the new products that cry out for satire review.
I’ve already secured my plane ticket, and I’m trying to get a handle on the best hotel (cheap, close to the Convention Center, liquor store nearby, wi-fi in the room — suggestions welcome).
My hope? The industry is so hungry for coverage that I’ll walk away from the show with armloads of stuff, which I’ll sell on eBay for cash, proving that fly fishing — like politics — can pay, provided you hit up the right people for bribes material assistance.
Much, much more to come on this topic of critical importance. Lots.
Naturally, I’ll entertain suggestions from the Undergrounders about the products, topics, and fawning industry sycophants people I absolutely must lampoon cover at the show.
See you in Denver, Tom Chandler.

Cool Tom,
Here is a tip for the show.
Remember the wheels of the Fly Fishing industry are greased by spiritous liquors.
Looking forward to finally meeting you out there.

Cheap, and near the convention center don’t exist here…although there is a new Residence Inn (18th & Curtis) a few blocks away that may not be terribly pricy.
If you are going to blow your wad on a nice hotel, Hotel Teatro, Hotel Monaco, and the Magnolia Hotel are all cool boutique hotels, for roughly the same price as a bland Hyatt or Marriott (the Marriott stinks). Its Denver…its all expensive.

Oh, and be sure you get to Trouts fly shop on 6th Avenue if you can make it…Tucker is a great guy and the shop is really cool. Charlie’s Flybox in Arvada is also nice, but not near downtown.

I’ve heard that Shotgun Willie’s (on S. Colorado Blvd.) is a nice place to discuss business. Very friendly staff. So I’ve heard.

There goes the neighborhood.

To the Underground’s dismay, the nearby hotels are booked (and no, I’m not spending $200+/night), and the more distant motels require a rental car.
Why no supermodel possessing a Denver apartment has stepped forward with an offer of housing is beyond me (is hospitality dead?), but I will persevere.
I will tame the travel beast, stalking and killing not only the finest hotel deals in the land, but also the choicest news from the Fly Fishing Retailer.

Moldy: The neighborhood “went” a long time ago — about the time the Trout Underground came into being…
