I’m on a Business Trip: Enjoy This Important Piece of Fly Fishing Art
By Tom Chandler on Aug 24, 2007 in Underground Entertainment

I’m on a daylong business trip, but planning to fish the backcountry this weekend. The Upper Sac seems to be fishing slow (at least from the perspective of an effete dry fly type), but I’ve got a few ideas about that too. So where’s everyone headed this weekend? Until then, see you at the Art Gallery, Tom Chandler.

Assuming the river hasn’t dried up completely, my wife and I aer going to paddle down the Flint River tomorrow morning. She enjoys paddling and I enjoy fishing, so it’s a match made in heaven…

Assuming I can find a car….I’m going out tonight with my roommate, and tomorrow I’ve got a date at the State Fair (Colorado). The odds are fair for tomorrow’s activities, but tonight isn’t looking so good. Wish me luck…and if anyone has about $120 laying around for a good cause and knows the number for Hertz in Colorado Springs: Tell them to send it to Raine at 2733 Sijan Drive - they’ll know what to do from there.

OK, a date at the state fair? Going to try to hold her hand in front of the always-romantic hog exhibit? Good luck from the Underground…

Largemouths, maybe muskies, because about half of all the good trout streams in Minnesota are now gone. They’ll be catching our brown trout down in Peoria.
By the way I think I recognize that gal’s side-mounted auto fly reel. I had one just like it. Oh, was I supposed to be looking at something else?

I may head to the Tennessee River looking for carp. Or I may just stay home and work on my newest project, a 6′6″ #3 split bamboo rod. I’m up to the final planing and getting very excited.

Reel? What reel?
Just got back from the Upper Sacramento. It’s hot, the river’s low, the fishing’s slow (report coming).
Tomorrow the L&T Nancy and I head for the backcountry, and Tuesday, I’m heading for some small streams in Southern Oregon. Life is hard…

Matt: Let us know how either turns out.

It went over well - except I got a suburban so the gas wasn’t cheap. And actually we held hands in front of the Pig races, so I have a little more class than cheap romantics in front of any old swine. Were talking top notch racing breed pigs. “The Mario Andretti of Pork!” I’m tired though - that’s a large fair = lots of walking.

Well I chose to work on the new rod. Between playing with the kids and chit chatting with the wife, I only managed to plan two of the strips. So I guess it turned into a family night instead of a fishing night.

C3C: A surbuban? Man, in high school that was only one step below a van as the ultimate makeout vehicle, though let’s hope yours didn’t come with a “Supermom” bumper sticker…
Matthew: You’ll send pictures when you get it done, right?

Well of course I will!

Oh, I’m not complaining about the space…just the terrible gas mileage. And for the record it was adorned with Oakley Sponsorships, fully loaded with soundsystem and the works. In this case the ‘burb trumped the van…

Nothing trumps a van — especially those late 1970s custom numbers with the floor-to-ceiling carpeting, the little round portal window, and the airbrushed picture of a sword-wielding, leather-bikini clad woman warrior on the side panels.
Oakley sponsorships? I scoff.

That would be hard to beat, I think the only thing it’s missing is indoor lighting and a flashing neon sign in one of the windows stating, “If this vans a’rockin don’t come a’knockin”….Perhaps one of the swivel chairs and a small card table…and since it’s 2007 a flip-down 27″ flat-screen with Dish…incase the making out doesn’t work out you could always drown your misery in some professional sports…?!
