Outdoor Writers, Take Note: Water Resistant Notebooks
By Tom Chandler on Aug 18, 2007 in Underground Entertainment
I like to take notes on those goofy essay/story/blog post ideas that occur to me while I’m in the backcountry. And I’m happier wandering around your average stationery store than I am a fly shop (that’s because I’ve already got one of everything you’ll find in a fly shop).
That’s why I sat up when I found this on the backcountry.com blog — water resistant paper and notebooks.

They’re from “Rite in the Rain” — a company whose Web site features a truckload of weatherproof notebooks and paper products, including a “fly fishing journal” and a cordura belt pouch (in case you need to quickdraw on a fast-moving idea).
I’m a fan of bound notebooks, and they’ve got those too, including a military-style “Tactical Pocket Notebook” in green or desert tan (don’t want to give your position away to insurgent poets). According to the site, you can write on the paper with a standard pencil.
Hot damn. Once again, the Underground’s hard at work improving the literary aspects of fly fishing. See you in mid-sonnet, Tom Chandler.

You still write things on PAPER?

Hell, I still use fiberglass and bamboo fly rods — paper seems pretty high tech. I mean, do you scribble notes on the 7 pound laptop you carried into a remote lake?

Of course not! LOL I use a small digital voice recorder the size/weight of a disposable lighter. Then I plug this into a USB port on my laptop and run it through my voice recognition word processor. Doesn’t everybody?
Your way seems awfully cumbersome and you’re still killing an alarming number of trees with all that bamboo and water resistant paper. Next I guess you’re gonna admit to still using LEAD pencils! LOL

So, I was in my local Cadet Story today to purchase soar throat stuffs (just got flu-misted which is quite a unique experience, and an annual one here) and cleaning supplies, and a few merit ribbons for our inspection this weekend, and low and behold I found Rite in the Rain notepads…they’re catching on I think!
