I’m not saying that any of you exactly owe me anything for the daily brilliance here, but if an Undergrounder had a spare $48.5 million lying around and wanted the Trout Underground broadcasting from a nifty new World Headquarters, there’s a 42,428 acre estate available in Central Oregon (near Prineville), complete with 35 miles of streams teeming with Brookies and rainbow trout.
It’s the Ochoco Ranch, and according to the press release:
“Featuring both easy access and outstanding privacy, Ochoco Ranch could serve as a private family retreat, a mountain conservation area, a relaxing guest ranch or center for year-round sports, or a combination of uses,” the news release stated.
The ranch is a sanctuary for Rocky Mountain elk, mule deer, pronghorn, grouse, quail and turkey, and the streams, creeks and rivers are home to rainbow and brook trout.”
Maybe I don’t need just one of you to throw down. Maybe four of you have a loose $12 million laying around. See how easy it gets? All I’m saying here is: Trout Underground World headquarters . I wouldn’t even demand the biggest house.

Is Ochoco close to the Umpqua as well, ’cause I think it is…pic of that bug on the way too. The reason we didn’t see them at the AIRFIELD, here at USAFA, before yesterday, is that they hide under these little shrub plants when the sun is out and it’s too warm for them to handle. They are black after all – not good for suny climates. And if you still have not figured it out, no they are not aquatic, but that doesn’t mean they might not live streamside out here – as a matter of fact there’s a number of streams (yes, they have fish, TROUT even, in them) within 200 yards East AND West of the initial location of our bugs. Ok, I’m sending the picture now.

I spent my childhood in that area and the land is even better than the pictures. The sad truth is that it will probably go to some development company like the ones who have already taken over the Bend area with golf resort communities. Maybe the Nature Conservancy can get their hands on it though it’s a pretty big chunk of change.

The Ochoco is not close to the Umpqua. The Ochoco Mountains are in East Central Oregon. The Umqua is in Southwestern Oregon.

The land is designated as “forest” so I *think* it shouldn’t be subdivided.

That’s nice thought but there isn’t much of an economy in that area other than the Les Schwab tire factory in Prineville. Plus the Bush administration still has enough time in office to sell out just about every acre of prime land to private interests and if they can equate a hatchery salmon to a wild one what’s to stop them from equating a forest with a few trees planted along the 8th fairway.

What I mean is it’s literally zoned F-1 (Forest Zone). You couldn’t put tract housing on it, though it could be divided into a handful of smaller ranches.
