I'm suggesting that...like everything else in the universe...Wal-Mart has its good and bad. My wife's company has never employed more than 3 people and currently employs only her. And shopping at Sam's Club saves her money vs. any other option...to the tune of several thousand dollars per year.

I have another friend who owns a company with fewer than 5 employees and sub-contracts a firm of 10 handicapped workers full-time for the past 5 years. They make 1 product and sell it in one retail channel: Wal-Mart. He nets over $1 million/year after paying the handicapped firm about $500k per year. His mom invented the product to aid with her arthritis.

I could give scores of similar examples.

Scotch by the gallon is good. (Irish by the gallon is better, but admittedly that's an opinion).

But surely you're not suggesting Wal-Mart is good for micro-enterprises (5 employees or less)? I'll spare us all the diatribe about what one can do to a small town.

I leave tomorrow am. Can't wait.

Tom,

I know of several micro-enterprise entrepreneurs who have become millionaires by selling their product in Wal-Marts. Food for thought.

Furthermore, I didn't really explain that the reason I mentioned Sam's Club is that I can buy GALLON bottles of Speyburn scotch there for about $25....roughly what I would pay for a decent 750ml bottle of vodka or even Speyburn elsewhere in this area. And since my wife's "micro-enterprise" has a business account at Sam's Club to help us keep costs down, I buy it there.

The world is a complicated place. Isn't it? And that's exactly why a flask of good whiskey is so handy.

I hesitate to say that at the age of 50 I found myself unable to imbibe in modaeration. So my flask is now filled with Poweraid , or the like. Not to say I salivate at the thought of licking the lid of Tom's flask . More power to you all.
Jealous,

Hey, you let them put their lips around your flask...what's the difference. You could just spray it into their mouth from a distance you know - adds a little sport to the situation.

Dan Hayes has it correctly. While sitting around the table with some of my relatives in Galway, the topic of which Irish Whiskey was better came up. I admitted to my dismay that Bushmill's was my drink of choice. Since then, it's usually Power's or Redbreast.

Have you ever had white lightening? If you had, you'd know better than to ask that question.

C3C: Camelbak? Look, it's one thing to hand your flask over to one of your buddies, but I draw the line at letting them "suck on my bite valve." It's just not manly.

Paul: Glass flask? Hard to find, but a good idea.

KW: My wife founded and runs an economic development non-profit aimed squarely at "micro enterprise." Accordingly, we don't shop at Wal-Mart of Sams Club much :-) (plus, they're all a bit of a drive in this part of the woods).

Larry: Yes, he is.

Hawg: With all the white lightning you've got down there, you're drinking the foreign stuff??

I thought the Irish taught the Scots how to make whiskey...

Yes, I guess I am trying to start a fight.

BTW, has anyone ever tried a "single pot still Irish whiskey?" They're tough to find here across the pond, but I've heard they rival single malts for complexity and goodness.

Tom,

Check out Sam's Club. I don't know what their gallon-sized offerings of Irish whiskey is like, but my flasks are filled from a gallon bottle of Speyburn 10-year-old single malt scotch. Being of Scotch-Irish descent, my preference for Scotch makes me TRULY old-school. After all, Irish whiskey is really just a poor Irishman's watered down version of REAL whiskey - single malt SCOTCH. LOL

Tom,

Why is it that all the flasks are stainless steel? It imparts most everything in it with a distinct steelie (not the 1000 cast variety) finish. Circa 1800s, nice old wicker covered glass flasks are the way to go... why spoil a nice Knockando or Dalwhinnie or even a Knob Creek for that matter with Stainless? Some things technology hasn't really improved! ;-)

Look, maybe there's a certain rustic attraction for flasks...but that's old school - not that any of you are old or anything, right?! But uh, you know a one gallon flask is RIDICULOUS, that's what a CamelBak is for. You can carry more Irish Whiskey than you could drink and still make it back to the car, plus all you have to do is give the soft rubber valve a gentle squeeze and the liquids are delivered right to your mouth. Plus there's all kinds of cool "upgrades" like the BigBite vlave, allowing more in, in less time. Outstanding. But hey, if you really need a bigass flask, kudos to Orvis.

Hey, where's the pic of my damn bug?

We embrace all creeds here at the Trout Underground, and have in fact enjoyed gallon-sized hits of Bushmills, Jameson's AND Tullamore (Dave Roberts' favorite). Once again, the Underground leads the fight for world peace...
