All Bamboo. All The Time (Except When We’re Not).

While I put together a trip report from yesterday’s sortie to a gorgeous small stream in an alpine valley, enjoy this tidbit sent to us by Alert Underground Reader & Espresso Drinker Murdock (of flyfishmagazine.com fame).
Yes, my readers, it’s yet another bamboo item — this one looking like something the Professor would cook up on Gilligan’s Island.

The Bamboo Buggy, complete with throne and parasol. I’d look good in one of these…
I would look so damned cool as I was chauffeured from one Upper Sacramento access point to another in the back of this (I especially like the bamboo parasol thing, though one wonders how that would fare at freeway speeds).
Imagine the looks from the bamboo-deprived anglers as I pull up for the evening hatch; they’d stare at my car and my bamboo uber-fly rods, then look at the sad graphite sticks in their hands, and know they’d already been bested.
At least that’s how it would happen in my rich fantasy life. Lord knows that could come true at any time. See you at the bamboo ranch, Tom Chandler.

Tom,
I just stumbled across a J.C. Higgins bamboo rod with J.C. Higgins reel. Three piece, with two tip sections. The tips have taken a slight set, one worse than the other. Owner has owned it his entire life, and never fished it; I believe it is over 60 years old meaning it was made no later than sometime around 1947, or earlier. Can’t tell what weight it is, but by the looks of the line, about a 4 wt., or 5 at most. Also, the ferrules are oxidized, so I can’t put it together to see how long it is. No info on the rod, except that it is a J.C. Higgins 3001.
Is it worth giving to a bamboo guy to re-hab?
