Anti-Shark Camo? Or Bikini Exploitation?
By Tom Chandler on May 17, 2007 in Underground Entertainment
In keeping with tradition, the always-snarky GetOutdoors blog never passes on a chance to post a bikini picture.
Frankly, I admire their commitment to their principles, so I’m we’re going to prominently feature this extraordinary development in outdoor safety technology:
Babes & hunks Anti-shark camo for surf boards:

OK, does anyone really think the Daktari stripes will stop a shark?
Frankly, I think the oil slick from your average slaw dog would drive away a shark better than this stuff, but as always, I’m leaving it up to the huddled mass of asylum inmates Undergrounders. Reality, or marketing trickery?
And who wants to be the first to test it in shark-infested waters?

I’m a northern california surfer. I think the principal of the zebra camo on the bottom of the board is valid. I think it’s based on the fact most poisonous ocean fish are striped. Years ago I saw some shark show special on tv where these researchers stuffed some white PVC piping, w/ holes drilled in it, w/ fish and chum, then capped and tied them to lines. One they striped w/ electricians tape, one they left plain white. These reef sharks would approach the stiped bait and turn away, but they were gnawing all over the plain white PVC bait.
After seeing that, I striped the bottom of my 7′4″ w/ a black sharpie and have hoped for the best. Apparently board’s coloring is already a disadvantage. Shark researchers call it “yum yum yellow” or “sharktreuse”.

a bunch of years ago I was hanging out in Morro Bay, CA supposedly working, but mostly kayak surfing in my whitewater boat. A local there was making and selling surfing kayaks painted to look like an orca (apparently sharks don’t like orcas). It basically was striped too, and it worked at least for the month I was there. Haven’t had any nasty encounters with big bull trout on the rivers here either, so it must work…..
