Lookie Here: Fishing Leads the Sports World in Eye Injuries

By Tom Chandler 4/25/2007

From the inimitable Goat -- Backcountry.com's gear blogger -- comes news that you've all been waiting for.

If you want an eye gouged out or damaged in some horrifying way, you're probably in the right sport.

From the story in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:nbsp;

Eye injuries from fishing -- a treble hook lodged in the eye or a sinker hitting the eye -- have surpassed eye injuries from basketball as the No. 1 sports-related eye injury.

Most of the injuries come at the hands of treble-hooked plugs, so fly fishers are probably clear on that, though nymph fishers might want to beware of this little fact: sinker-related injuries are number two on the list.
