Snow Falling on April: Winter Holds Fast on the Upper Sacramento River

Every year seems to bring us a pre-season opening snow storm on the Upper Sacramento River.

As far as snowstorms go, this one probably won’t bring out the snow plows, but there’s already a good inch of the fluffy stuff building up and it’s still coming down hard.

Taken this morning; there’s already lots more where this came from.

How does this affect you? Probably not at all. I just liked the picture.

Planning on hitting the river this Sat so will have to wait and see I guess. One benefit to these colder temps is that the river level will remain low through the weekend anyway.

This early spring snow dusting gives our little burg a kind of Currier and Ives look and feel.

That’s fine, now make it go away Tom…

Brian: I wouldn’t worry. Temps on Saturday should be low (in fact, rain & snow are forecast), and the river’s running so low now that everything will be fishable.

Biggest problem might be staying off the redds. I have no idea how the fishing is, though I hope to find out this weekend.

Redd avoidance can be a problem on the Upper Sac since the fish often build redds right where anglers tend to cross the river. That being at pool tailouts, etc.

I don’t know how the fishing is either. The cold weather could be limiting the hatches so it might be a nymph show this weekend.

Oh, we don’t live in a place nearly that fancy.

We had our Easter show a week ago. Today (in eastern PA) i reached 80 F. Already, many of the waterways the Fish and Boat Commission dumped hatchery mongrels into have warmed beyond a trout’s tolerance. So much for another season’s worth of put-and-take.

Yow! Already? Guess delayed harvest is sometimes more of a concept than a reality.
