Despite what people have been told for years, unused and expired prescription drugs should not be disposed of in the toilet, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
“Medications that are flushed down the toilet or thrown straight into the garbage can and do find their way into our nation’s waterways every day,†Sam D. Hamilton, Southeastern Regional Director, said in a statement released today.
The implications are monstrous. Will fly fishers start flushing Valium down the toilet to make spooky fish more susceptible to 5x tippet?
Will animal rights activists begin massive Prozac flushing programs to help “depressed” fish populations?
Because we’re selfless bastards, the Underground is going to stay on this story as it develops (or at least until lunch). No need to thank us.

In all seriousness, I’ve read of some serious effects on fish due to, of all things, the hormones from discarded birth control pills, etc. At times, the estrogen levels in the Potomac River have been so high, the male smallmouths start developing ovaries and eggs.

I think it’s only fair that if I’m slow and dreamy eyed the trout should be too. More sporting really. Besides I wouldn’t have to flush so much of the stuff away if the cops would stop being such a nuisance.
