New outdoor blogs are popping up left and right, but I’ve chosen to highlight this one for a truly stellar reason.
You see, the author used to ditch school to go the horse races.
The Ties That Bind
Mark Freeman is the Oregon Mail Tribune’s Outdoor Writer, but at San Jose State, I knew him as the guy who first discovered the diner that would sell pitchers of beer early in the day (early in the morning, actually).
One day a friend and I stumbled across him on campus. We were on our way to class. He was on his way to play the ponies.
With a background like that, it’s little wonder he ended up a writer.

His paper started several blogs, but pop in to his once in a while and we’ll drive the outdoor blog visitor count far beyond that of the Mail Tribune’s “lesser” blogs, scoring a significant moral victory for the outdoor world.
Or something like that.

Mark has always been a favorite of mine since he wrote this hilarious article on avoiding having to take Martha Stewart salmon fishing on the Rogue for a show she was doing on preparing fresh salmon. Being the manly guy that he is, she never made it into his truck.
Its a classic. I did a web search, but could not find it.

Dang, Mark is actually really good. Makes me feel bad for calling my blog “oregon outdoor journal”. I don’t want to have to go up against this guy for google-share.

I wouldn’t worry. Mark’s an excellent writer, but like all newspapermen, he mainly spends his time in dark, smoky bars or under his desk, hiding from his editor. How much competition could he be?

Sweet, but I’m really here to share this outstanding link with everyone – at the cost of a few quasi-anonymous grade school student’s self confidence and ability to face the world later in life. As fly fisherman we’re all perfectionists to some extent so I feel most of us can understand where this guy is coming from.
