The Next Great Idea: a $30 Million Glass Bridge to Nowhere
By Tom Chandler on Mar 20, 2007 in Underground Entertainment
From the new Mark Freeman Blog (It’s one of the Mail Tribune blogs, but the paper’s apparently too cheap to give the blog it’s own name) comes news of a glass bridge that allows you to look directly down into the Grand Canyon:
This is the new glass-bottom Skywalk unveiled today at the Grand Canyon, where you can now get a birds-eye view of the bottom of the canyon by actually peeking between your boots.
That’s right. This $30 million bridge extends over the canyon’s rim, and the glass floor allows visitors to look straight-down 4,000 feet into the depths below.
Frankly, we think it’s pretty woosie.
Whatever happened to the good old days when you slugged down two beers in the desert heat and then sidled up to the edge of a sheer 4,000 foot drop?
Kids these days. They’ve got no gumption.

You forgot to mention that the tribe is charging
$25 a pop to walk out on their $30 million tourist
trap.

You didn’t think it would be free??? I mean, the whole place is one gigantic tourist trap… why not add another exhibit?

Free or $100, I’m not doing it.
I wonder how they’re going to feel about the base jumpers who are inevitably going to show up…

Looks like a nice casting platform, but you would need a heck of a lot of running line to reach the river.

Hey, we are cheap but it does have a name: The Fish Hack at The Fish Wrap. We couldn’t afford to buy one so Freeman made it up himself.
And I’ve heard the fee to walk on the glass lip is $75 — $50 entry fee to tribal area and $25 to take the walk.

With some savvy marketing, the suicidal types will flock to the site to make pretty pictures on the rocks below.
I doubt they will complain about the price of admission, as the ticket is one way…
This could impact sales for the Golden Gate Bridge tour.

kbarton: Good point. Perhaps the tribe shouldn’t accept credit cards.
Scott: See, I’d know the name if it said “The Fish Hack at the Fish Wrap” on the header. And a separate RSS feeds would be nice. But hey, always nice to see a paper take the engagement leap. We promise only to make fun of Mark’s picture from now on…

Not only are we cheap, but we don’t know what the hell we’re doing, technically speaking. And Mark would love for you to make fun of his picture, I’m sure.
We’re on the cusp of a Web site redesign and not wanting to invest too much more time in the old jobber. The name appears on our blog page’s front page but not on Freeman’s actual page. Go figger.
Thanks for the link, y’all.
