Jefferson State "Creeking" by Whitewater Kayaker & Photographer

The Upper Sacramento River is home to many different species–including fly fishers and kayakers.

I found a wholly interesting photo site (via the Piton) by a local kayaker and photographer with cool photos of whitewater crazies mucking about on some the larger tributaries in the “State of Jefferson” and the Upper Sacramento River.

Also mentioned is Box Canyon, the very upper part of the Upper Sac, where I often see kayakers (and wonder at their sanity).

I was concerned that kayakers and fly fishers might come into conflict when the river was opened to year-round fishing, but in truth, I’ve only had one “sub-optimal” experience with a kayaker in all my years on the river (and lots of positive ones).

Sure, you can wonder at their sanity, but you’ve gotta feel some kinship for anyone who loves the river as much as we do.

    Tom:
It’s interesting how perspectives may change. During my kayaking heydays (including the Box Canyon), upon encountering fly fishers I was often asked by fellow kayakers why anyone would pursue something as boring as fishing. Now most all my kin (easily converted) more commonly ask, “Are you bringing a four or a five weight?”

Call us crazy but the river skills developed kayaking have been a blessing, providing a gateway to spectacular settings and otherwise inaccessible fisheries. For instance, while the Upper Sac may be a bit high wading in most places, at today’s flow of 1700 cfs, “fishineering” out of a whitewater raft could make for a great adventure! Even if we don’t catch fish the workout is almost as good as rowing a driftboat around a windy lake ;>)
