The Mailbag Speaks: Where Would You Take a Luxury Fly Fishing Vacation?
By Tom Chandler on Mar 2, 2007 in Underground Entertainment
Yesterday I received an e-mail from a trip coordinator looking for suggestions. Which just became a question for the Undergrounders.
Her firm was taking its best customers on a two-day fly fishing junket in May, and wanted a luxury destination–a place where the sports could enjoy excellent (guided, I assume) fly fishing while the non-fly fishers and spouses would be pampered.
Frankly, I’d rather contribute to Nestle’s latest “strong-arming” strategy session than spend too much time at a luxury resort, but hey–let’s help this poor woman out.
Given that the company’s based in the USA, the trip’s only two days of fishing (so traveling three days to Christmas Island is probably out), and she wants this to happen in May.
What would you suggest?
Keep in mind the time of year. And think luxury, you magnificent bastards.

Park City. The Weber and the Provo are out the back door, and Park City is the most luxurious ski town I’ve ever been to.

What was the question again? I got bubbles up my nose.

If they want east coast: Glendorn. It’s a Relais and Chateaux property. It’s in NW PA and very oddly just minutes from downtown Bradford. But it is swanky. Extremely swanky.

Greenbrier, WV is very very luxurious.
More for non-anglers.
About the only place my wife will go with me if I go fishing.
No, I’ve never been.

Oenophile, I was going to suggest Greenbriar. Never fished up there but it seems like native brookie territory.
I also don’t know specifically about the fishing here, but Lake Placid, NY is a stunningly beautiful place, the season is right and the resort hotels there are top notch.

I will personally take the girl in the tub…I would not even charge, luxury and fishing…Even a personal full body massage from the guide (me).

Megan: Soft-core porn? Of course not. It’s merely the photographic expression of luxury, and believe me, you wouldn’t want to see a picture of Dave Roberts in a bubble bath…
Many good suggestions here, though I’m surprised that Baja and Tennessee haven’t yet made the list (they just did).

May is a tough month. Run off is high. There places in the SE US for trout fishing and nice things for the wife. I think the best choice however, is to skip the trout and go for tarpon, snook, red fish, jacks and such.
So, the Naples, Florida Ritz Carlton would be the winner IMMHO. The trip would need to be tied in with a guide service which the Ritz will provide. Fishing is outstanding that time of year in the 10,000 Islands, Everglades area. The Ritz is well, the Ritz: a spa, very nice beach and pool, lots of nearby shopping. The concierge can provide lots of extra activities.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas
A nice, unique little town in the Ozarks.
Spas, antiques, art and architecture for the wives, and the White River is minutes away.

Nemicolin Woodlands Resort in SW Pennsylvania…resortish type stuff and guided fishing on some local PA waters around Ohiopyle. Frank Loyd Wright’s very famous house is also just up the road.

Actually PA is a terrible place to bring people on a business, apricot scrub fishing trip. Please don’t pass the previous info on.
Tom Chandler | Mar 5, 2007 | Reply
Noted. Scratch PA (too late).

Blackberry Farm. Perfect weather that time of year to hit the water in TN The fishing on the property is good, but gets boring fairly quickly, unless you are a member of the Spring Ridge Club. When it does, Townsend and the GSMNP is just down the road. Lots of stuff for the non-fishing folks to blow cash on as well..

I mentioned Blackberry in my response to the woman who wrote and asked the question.
Hopefully, she’ll leave a comment here about the suggestions. Be nice to see if the Underground has managed to grease the wheels of commerce just a little… 8-)

Spring Ridge Criminal Club - they are the ones that unlawfully kept part of the Little Juniata closed for many years. It is now open to the public thanks to many hard working locals…please do not support any apect of Spring Ridge Club.

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions! I definitely appreciate the expert point of view, especially since I am a fly fishing novice!

Maureen: Let us know what happens in the end. And if you end up at the Henry’s Fork Lodge, any chance you could sneak me in? I’d stay in the closet. You’d hardly know I was there… 8-)
