At the Trout Underground, we may be cynical louts, but we’re not immune to the family attractions of the sport.
So when John at Carp on the Fly posted about taking his two year-old fishing, yes, the Underground melted like Gink on a Redding summer day.
This after dad hooked a small carp for her to play:
Elia managed to reel a couple of cranks to bring some line in, but she basically held the rod up high and back up, dragging the carp onto a bed of leaves that marked the shoreline. She peered down at the fish with a huge smile on her face and rushed forward to pet the fish’s tail. As soon as her little hands touched the fish it flapped around a bit, splashing Elia with water and causing her to jump back into the bushes! I reached down and took the fly out of the top lip.
“Should we let him go?” I asked her.
She got a real serious look on her face and said “Ummmm….Yeah.”
Buttah. It’s like buttah.

The best way to fly fish for carp: 1 cup Karo syrup handful of black (or green) wooley buggers. gently dip wooley buggers in Karo syrup then fling at pooling carp. This is a riot…Although some of my more affuent fishing friends recomend “just use a crawler and spin cast set up”, this is a great way to pass time when its 90+ deg. and the trout are immobile. Its like salmon fishing in the summer, or kinda like pulling a tire off the bottom of the river.

For the record, this is the second time Elia has fought a carp. The first time she was just 22 months old and couldn’t even keep my 4 wt from falling into the water. She did much better with her little Dora the Explorer Pole this time around. Her brother JJ saw his first fish (a carp of course) at just 6 weeks old!
Teach ‘em the value of carp while they are young!
