When Ice Fishing Just Seems Too…. Safe: Underwater Ice Hockey WITHOUT Oxygen

After shoveling enough snow to fill my own lake, I found this little goody via Spluch: Underwater ice hockey

The first ever World Cup in the new extreme sport of underwater ice hockey has been staged in the frozen White Sea lake in Austria. Eight nations battled it out in the freezing water under a thick ice covering – without oxygen.

The no oxygen rule meant that players had to resurface frequently through special holes drilled in the ice so they could get air.

And to think I thought ice fishing was a questionable sport…

On the subject of ice and cold stuff, anyone ever heard of “thunder snow?” It’s real: it occurs when a pressure system like a summer thunderstorm forms, but it’s cold enough to snow. Well, you know how in some parts of a thunderstorm you can get tons of precipitation, it’s the same with the snow. It’s possible we could get 3-8″ of snow here in a half-hour today at some point, that’s rediculous!  (Quote)

Never heard of it, but in a universe gone largely mad, why the hell not?

The real question is this: Do the C4Cs get to shovel all the snow?  (Quote)

If I was getting 8″ of snow per half hour, I think I’d throw up my arms in frustration, sit back with something warm to drink at my tying desk, and forget shoveling snow. Being from Alabama, shoveling snow is something I’ve never had to do…ever. Seems like an important part of the cultural experience I’ve missed out on. We use shovels for digging up red clay around these parts. Interestingly enough, about five years ago, we were predicted to experience “thunder snow” but it never happened. My father claims he saw it here once when he was a kid. Take care,

No, as a matter of fact, we generally like it because it ‘prohibits’ us from running strips – it’s a safety issue. Rather than us shovel it, they bring out a flotilla of little service carts with plows (these things don’t even count as golf carts) and attempt to plow the T-Zo, it’s good fun to watch!  (Quote)
