Afraid Your Expensive Gear Will be Stolen While You’re Off Fly Fishing? Try This Theft Deterrent System.

It might not be the single most effective theft deterrent system ever made, but it’s certainly one of the most lethal looking:

From SCIFI.COM :

Attaching a 4-inch coil to a boom on the roof of his car, Australian Peter Terren created what is no doubt the coolest-looking theft deterrent to ever be built into a motor vehicle. Terren captured the photo above, showing the coil’s ring of electricity (which he calls the Eye of Sauron, after the character in The Lord of the Rings), with time-lapse photography.

Now you can leave your car - packed with all your backup gear - in a remote location without fear of theft, though one wonders what you’ll do with the scorched bodies of all the wild animals who wandered by for a look.

On second thought, the Trout Underground thinks this might not be such a good idea after all.

Oh My Gawd, I must own this…

Being a sadistic SOB by nature, I can envision pulling into the campground on the McCloud, rolling out the sleeping bag next to the car, then hitting the switch to turn on the Deadly Bugzapper Defense System.

After dropping my drawers, I will offer my posterior to every blood sucking mosquito in the watershed.

The carnage will be absolute….lulled to sleep by the sound of No See Um’s dieing by the bazillion.

The sight of my posterior is likely to make nearby campers nauseous, and they will flee the area in droves.

With the stream now free of insects, and the Legions of Eddie Bauer gone, I will know bliss.

I wonder how fast this thing rotates? Too slow, I suspect, to protect any pink skin from the ravages of starved mosquitoes.

Still, be fun to try. Who wants to pony up for a test unit?

Is that a Tesla coil? Can I get one of those for the up coming steelhead season? Or will it cook me along with the spincasting neckcar fans?
