Elephant Destroys a Minivan: It’s Not Fly Fishing, But Hasn’t Everyone Wanted to Do This?

Sure, the Trout Underground gets angry at life-sucking, amoral corporations, but we’re not all about the suffering here. No, the Trout Underground’s horizons are broad – they spread far beyond the usual and mundane.

In this case, they spread to Sri Lanka, where an elephant trashed a minivan at an elephant polo tournament, and frankly, who can blame her?

Hell, there have been plenty of times when I wanted to trash someone’s minivan, and if I weighed several tons, you’d probably see my face in the picture below.

Elephant destroys a minibus

Abey, an 18-year-old elephant, destroys a minibus after throwing its rider and going on a rampage during Sri Lanka’s sixth annual elephant polo tournament in Galle on Wednesday. The 4-ton elephant was subdued after crushing the Spanish team’s minibus.

I could have used the elephant last night. I went to the monthly fly club dinner, and as usual, a speaker who could have been great, showed us his vacation pictures. I think that makes it like 100 in a row.

Do you have one of an Elephant destroying a slide projector?

reminds me of an essay I assigned my students recently. They did not destroy my minivan in a musth-maddened rage. George Orwell, “Shooting an Elephant” ( http://www.online-literature.com/orwell/887/ ), familiar to all veterans of moderately rigorous literature or civics programs. Perhaps professional athlete elephants react differently than working-class elephants.

Perhaps it was just a goal line celebration? It’s hardly more “over the top” than a lot of the stuff you see in the NFL.  (Quote)

Elephant Polo is truely the most appalling of
all “sports”.

One would expect that your readers are sensitive enough to further expose this misguided hype (which now pollutes India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand tourism) for what it really is : the last hurrah of a most noble species destined for extinction, chased over a dusty field, saddled and applauded by Asia’s neo-colonial socialites drenched in gin and tonic.

The truth is that these wonderful creatures are degraded to the role of cash cows to enrich promoters and misguided sponsors under the disguise to promoting tourism to Sri Lanka. The opposite is true: the torture and stress revealed by one of the elephants in Galle should be a wakeup call for all animal lovers to demand a permanant stop to such a platent outrage and violation of nature.

Even the claim to history is a blatant lie. No decent polo playing Moghul would ever have lowered himself to such ridicule.
