Here’s something fly fishing desperately needs: an all new way to denigrate the other fly fishers on the river.

We bring you news that the American Dialect society has chosen its 2006 Word of the Year. (Unbelievably, it’s got nothing to do with the Trout Underground.)

It’s Plutoed.

In its 17th annual words of the year vote, the American Dialect Society voted “plutoed” as the word of the year, in a run-off against climate canary. To pluto is to demote or devalue someone or something, as happened to the former planet Pluto when the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union decided Pluto no longer met its definition of a planet.

(And don’t bother to check – Plutoed.com is already taken.)

This, my friends, is a word worth repeating. A word to be hauled out and used with regularity. As in “I so totally plutoed that idiot’s casting.”

Or “The next time you pluto my trout, I’m going to kick your ass to… pluto.” Something like that.

In fact, I’m expecting the loyal Undergrounders to use the words “pluto” or “plutoed” in pretty much every post.

You’re clearly not following my lead and using “Paris Hilton” in your comments, thereby depriving the Underground of all kinds of search engine traffic, but we can take advantage of what’s sure to be a temporary spike in “pluto.”

Pluto. Or get Plutoed. It’s your choice.
