Gone Fly Fishing. Don’t Leave Any Nasty Notes.
By Tom Chandler on Jan 21, 2007 in Fly Fishing
After working the last three weekends, I’m taking Monday off and fly fishing the Rogue with Dave Roberts.

Flows are good, but it’s been damned cold. Neither of us has a clue what’s happening. Flavs? BWO’s? Nothing?
In truth, it doesn’t matter. We’re going to fish some nice bamboo fly rods - maybe even catch a steelhead.
Back Tuesday with a report (maybe). See you on the river, Tom Chandler.

I had one of the best January weekends I can remember in some time. Saturday I caught two large steelhead (8 and 6 lbs) on streamers, and 3 ~15 inch fish on soft hackles. Sunday I caught another steelhead and another ~15 inch fish on small dark PT nymphs. Saturday I used a Teeny T-200, and Sunday all the fish came on a floating line with 5 spit shot. Only small midges were rising (tan) - I did not see any mayflies either day. All the fish were on the bottom. Only going deep seemed to work.
I either would hook a rock or a fish. I lost quite a few. The steelhead were holding at the head of pools, just out of the riffle. The smaller fish were caught in slower, shallower water.
Drifting dries brought no rises.

steelheading, not just fishing, steelheading with Dave Roberts. I don’t know the guy, but if there is any one you want to fish the rogue with it would be him. and with bamboo? the ultimate? sounds like it would be, though I’ve never picked a stick up(that was a fishable one,,have a relic)and can only imagine. I live two doors down from Raine, and still haven’t fished bamboo. well, when the time is right……… back to steelies…the water is low, clear and fish should be stacked in the obvious places, good luck and can’t wait to hear the report.

Didn’t happen. Roberts came down with the flu, so I fished the Upper Sac instead.
Which wasn’t any better than the previous trips. Crap.

Its been hit or miss here in W. Mich. Stoneflies and big Hares ears seem to be the ticket. Just like out west the fish are holding at the pool heads. Got a 14-1/2# Steelie yesterday, Took half the day though. Mostly 12″-14″ browns with an occasional rainbow (or steelie fry, not sure), they stock pretty heavily over here. If any of you guys are ever in Mich. contact me, I would be glad to bust out the Hyde and take you fishing!!!!
