How Could We Miss This? Droppin’ of the Carp Rings in New Year…
By Tom Chandler on Jan 5, 2007 in Underground Entertainment
The Underground has failed you, my faithful readers. I missed this Important Carp-Related New Year’s news:
PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. — Some state residents will be celebrating the new year in a very Midwestern way — by watching a 20-pound female carp being lowered from a 110-foot crane.
I can think of a lot of things I’d like to see lowered from a crane, and “carp” isn’t necessarily at the top of the list, but the Underground doesn’t discrminate when it comes to reporting fish-releated festivities (we report, you snigger): Droppin’ of the Carp Rings in Midwest New Year

Yep, that is weird. Even for me.

This story didn’t get really weird until I realized this is a frozen dead carp, not a live one.
Tom Chandler | Jan 5, 2007 | Reply
It wasn’t just that that the carp is frozen and dead, it’s that apparently residents like to kiss the frozen, dead carp on the lips.

If “dropping the carp” isn’t already a euphemism for something else, it should be.

Look people. It’s a hard life in Wisconsin. You have to invent your own kinds of entertainment. I’ve since escaped life in “Wisco” but I spent my youth in the river valley of the mighty Mississippi. Not too far from PDC as a matter of fact. Things get a little backward in them there coulees and valleys. Surely you’ve heard of the tradition of parking a junker car on the ice of the lakes and placing bets as to when it will fall through in the spring thaw? Good salt of the earth entertainment if you ask me!

Megan;
Thanks for the upper midwest perspective.
I’ve heard of the car thing before, but never heard of anyone kissing the car on the lips for good luck (as with the carp).
And Ed’s post brings up an excellent (if largely twisted) point. Yes, “Dropping the Carp” should soon become a part of the everyday zeitgeist, as in “Where’s Tom? He’s behind those trees at the pond, dropping the carp.“

One Paris Hilton reference and an azz joke chaser, methinks the moral highground is in full retreat..
As I am largely immune to TC’s “Jim Jones-like” charismatic cult following, I would vote for :
Dropping the Carp: the act of fishing a weighted nymph, with brass bead head, on a short leader adorned with one or more split shot.
Usage Example: “Goddamn water was so high, I had to drop Carp on ‘em.”

kbarton is the first one in line for free kool-aid!
Interesting usage. But you should know that “Dropping the Carp” may enjoy little time in the sun.
“Lowering the Possum” has already replaced it…
