Curmudgeonly wooden boat story.
Salmonflies on the Big Hole. Sometime in the 80′s. Ahead of us in the launch line at Divide is a gorgeous brand new homebuilt wooden driftboat. Flawless varnish gleams on this proud product of hundreds of hours in the garage. The woodscrews are still shiny. The proud but understandably apprehensive captain asks if there are any notable river dangers ahead. We advise him to miss the larger rocks (we’re smartass Butte guys after all), but correctly inform him that he can’t go too far wrong by taking the left channel all the way down until he spies the powerline that crosses near the bottom of the canyon. A benign-looking diversion takes off immediately below there. The cutback from that ditch pours over a small dam which sports huge iron teeth. You must bear river right at the bottom of the canyon.
You’ve already guessed the rest of the story. At the takeout at Melrose Bill Caine said that he was pulling out of the canyon about the same time as the novice captain. Bill swore that he yelled words of warning immediately before the boat entered the diversion. Floating down later we saw the wooden shards, some of them with shiny wood screws in them.

Curmudgeonly story? More like a fly fisher’s campfire horror story – the kind of thing you tell around the fire to freak the newbies.
Sorta like that story about the guy and the girl making out in the car, then hearing on the radio that a psychotic killer had escaped, and they zoom out of their makeout spot and when they get to her house, they find a bloodied hook on the door handle.
It’s just like that, only with wood. And shiny wood screws.
