The Benefits of Fly Fishing Extend to the Local Economy
By Tom Chandler on Dec 11, 2006 in Environment
MidCurrent tracks down another interesting story in the West’s ongoing water wars - this one aimed squarely at determining the value of fly fishing to a local economy.
Sure, it’s hard to place a dollar value on that moment where the fly is embedded in your back, the fly line is wrapped around your legs, and the current’s threatening to sweep you downriver, but these guys are trying.
At stake? How much water is put in the Bighorn River (and taken out of Bighorn Lake).
Recreational usage of the river far exceeds that of the lake, but locals - who use the lake more often - want some water kept in the drought-stricken lake for their use. Expect plenty more conversations like these in the coming years…
