Snow Falling on River: The Trout Underground Freezes His Butt Off »

There’s no business like snow business, at least not when you’re expecting the cosmic BWO hatch and driving the fishing Bronco through a lot of the slippery white stuff to fish.

Cagey fly fisher or frozen human splash test dummy? You decide.
Getting on the river on a day like today isn’t so much a test of […]

The Underground’s Back! And Just in Time for Snow. »

Our long holiday trek behind us (for future reference, the Wonderdog doesn’t like 10.5 hour car trips, and frankly, neither do I), the Underground’s raring to go fishing.
Which is probably why snow started falling this morning, with 3″-5″ forecast for today. This doesn’t exactly mean you don’t go fishing, but you have to be sure […]

Christmas Shopping? The Underground Solution for Lazy, No-Good Fly Fishers »

Just a reminder; the Underground is an affiliate of the Sierra Trading Post, Orvis and Cabelas.
Given the lazy nature of most fly fishers, these links represent a golden opportunity to buy all your Trout Underground-bound Xmas gifts without leaving your desk!
Yes Undergrounders, we’re offering yet another service for the weak, infirm and just downright lazy […]

Shocker! Montana Overrun by People With More Money Than Us. »

Via MidCurrent comes an excellent article by Jim Robbins summarizing the new Western land grab occurring in Montana right now.
The fact that Montana and the Rocky Mountain West isn’t exactly a shocker for many of us, but Robbins handles the subject in a deft manner, and the article is well worth a read.
He explains the […]

Happy Thanksgiving From the Trout Underground! »

The L&T Nancy, Wally the Wonderdog and myself are in the process of looming up the truck and driving to Santa Maria for a long-overdue Thanksgiving visit to my parents.
Sadly, there are no trout to be found down there, but even a grotesque shortage of trout can’t deter the Underground.
Still, since you’re unlikely to hear […]

Beautiful Rant About Fish Magazines and the Shack Nasties »

From the all-seeing eyes at the Moldy Chum comes this rant by Bruce Smithhammer.

It’s late January, and if I find myself leafing through one more tired article on the MONSTER BROOK TROUT OF LABRADOR, or GUARANTEED TACTICS FOR STILLWATER HAWGS, I’m going to lose it. Fishing rags — why do I buy them again […]

Waterproof Camcorder? Isn’t it Time for The RodCam? »

From those minions of mirth over at GetOutdoors comes this product notice - the Oregon Scientific ATC2K waterproof video camera for only $130.

Am I alone in thinking that some well-heeled member of the Underground needs to purchase this camera and then create fly fishing’s first “RodCam” feature-length film?
Imagine the thrills and spills of dangerous wading. […]

Another Underground Grand Slam: Let the Gloating Begin »

Given that 98% of the time you spend fly fishing could be technically classified as a failure, then having expectations for the remaining 2% seems pretty far fetched.
So it’s probably accurate to say that going fly fishing with a lot of expectations in place simply means you think you know what’s about to happen before […]

Legal Case of EXTREME Importance to all Animal Lovers… »

Here at the Trout Underground, we leave no stone unturned in our search for legal matters of interest to our readers.
In this case, Fly Fishing Yellowstone stumbled across a pivotal criminal case where a man is facing charges for having sex with… a dead deer. (No, still not making it up):
From the Retread Ranger site […]

The Omen III: Never Trust a Fishing Report Over 30 (days old). »

The first thing Chris said when I called him was “Last year on this day I had one of the best BWO hatches I’ve ever seen on this river.”
Talk about front-loading the conversation.
In truth, it didn’t matter - it was Thursday and I was going fishing, good omens or not. And frankly, things looked pretty […]

More Chum: This Time it’s Made from Rainbow Trout »

Once again the Chum (who must have just been laid off or something) piles on the unusual.
In this case, it’s a pic of a pike eating a rainbow trout. The Rainbow trout doesn’t appear all that happy about it.

See it bigger here.

Lower Snake Dam Removal Would Save Taxpayers $5 Billion »

While I’m in the mood to rant about rivers with four stupid, damaging, need-to-be-removed dams on them, a new study (craftily titled “Revenue Stream”) suggests that removing the four Lower Snake River dams would save taxpayers $5 Billion dollars. (via Moldy Chum.)
These are the same dams that don’t contribute much of anything to the economy […]
