I missed this announcement the first time, but the Interior Department’s attempt to hand over the federal government’s Gunnison River water rights to Colorado cities and businesses was stymied by a lawsuit.
After winning the court battle, conservationists stocked 85,000 rainbow fingerlings in the river to reverse the effects of six years of whirling disease.
The good guys won one, and you can read about it here on MidCurrent, who are channeling for Ed Dentry of the Rocky Mountain News – one of the better outdoor columnists.

Too bad part of it’s already a public land reservoir. I’m planning a backpacking trip out in that area for late spring. The Wiminuche Wilderness actually. Sure to be a good time!

Always good. We’ll have to see what happens, but after our recent snowstorm, I don’t if your Thanksgiving hike back to Seven Lakes will be possible.
I’ll try to get a sense of that before you get here.

Thanks for sharing the good news! I was able to fish the Gunnison in the park a couple of times this past summer and it was awesome to say the least. I’m glad the good guys won for a change…

For a change. Let’s hope the Klamath and Snake rivers have it so good…
