The Underground’s Back! And Just in Time for Snow.
By Tom Chandler on Nov 26, 2006 in Upper Sacramento
Our long holiday trek behind us (for future reference, the Wonderdog doesn’t like 10.5 hour car trips, and frankly, neither do I), the Underground’s raring to go fishing.
Which is probably why snow started falling this morning, with 3″-5″ forecast for today. This doesn’t exactly mean you don’t go fishing, but you have to be sure you can get on and off the river without getting walled in by a snowplow.

Snow falling on Black Butte Summit (see “I-5 Road Cam” button on right).
Of course, I only know what’s happening in Mount Shasta, so I make extensive use of the CalTrains road cameras you’ll find linked to the “I-5 Road Cam” button to the left.
These might be the handiest little toys the winter-ready Upper Sacramento fly fisher has; they don’t tell you anything about the river, but they do help you decide if you can get to the thing.
In the winter, getting there is half the battle (the other half is deciding between #20 or #22 dries, and 6x or 7x).
If I fish, you’ll hear about it here first.
As for the Underground, it’s great to be back in the saddle, and I’ve got plenty of interesting stuff piled up, including a Baja trip report and an interview with someone who spent the summer driving around the country and fishing.
Right now? A couple posts, and I’m heading for the river. See you there, Tom Chandler.
