Adding Orvis: Shameless Commerce at the Underground
By Tom Chandler on Nov 14, 2006 in shameless commerce
The eagle-eyed among you will notice I added an Orvis affiliate button to the Underground’s sidebar.
The idea is simple: if you’re going to buy something from them anyway, then click through to their site from here, and I’ll get a small fraction to help support the Underground.
And hell, if you want to buy something and send it to me as a gift, that’s a win-win for me…
My favorite Orvis goodies might be their CFO reels. Machined and pretty, Orvis reduced the price to under $200, and my only wish is they still made the CFO IV size.
The machined Battenkills are under $100, and they *are* available in bigger sizes. An excellent deal, and a perfect Xmas gift for your favorite blogger.
I own a fair amount of Orvis gear (waders, chest pack, reels, a 1945 Orvis bamboo rod, etc), and one thing’s for sure - their service is tough to beat.
See you behind the counter, Tom Chandler.

Have you thought of adding Cabela’s to the side bar?
I probably order more stuff from them than anyone else.

Accepting ads? Now you’re no different than THE MAN. Where’s the separation of church and state? The Underground has been compromised! Kidding. More power to anyone who can earn income from a blog.

Ads? Not hardly, bucko. I’m an affiliate. I get paid only if someone clicks a button and orders something.
I’m trying the affiliate model first because advertising means a pissed-off advertiser can write me nasty e-mails because I wrote a product review for a competing product, or didn’t like theirs.
This way, there’s no leverage. At this point, I’m looking for a way for the Underground to pay for its escalating hosting costs. The more popular it gets, the more bandwidth gets used, so…
And Brain - I had just applied for a Cabelas affiliate last night. We’ll see if it comes through….

The Fishing Jones blog, alas, has no such problems with bandwidth…
