Snow Falls on Upper Sac

Upper Sacramento early snowAfter yesterday’s wildly underachieving fishing trip, I drank to excess, and woke up this morning to several inches of snow on the ground.

Wally the Wonderdog was - of course - very pleased.

He loves snow. He plays in snow. His tongue hangs out his mouth onto the snow. He can’t get enough snow.

I think he’d feel differently if he had to shovel the stuff.

I don’t expect the snow to last long, and we’ll have to see what it means to the river flows.

Don’t forget: you can see the snow for yourself on the Caltrans Traffic cams.

And get immediate weather forecasts for the Upper Sac region here (both links are in the Underground’s “Quick Clicks” sidebar).

Is this the start of the winter fishing on the Upper Sacramento? Not based on the calendar, but perhaps in reality… See you behind the snow shovel, Tom Chandler.

Your trip yesterday pretty much mirrored my trip on Sat. I had 3 grabs and that was it. No fish landed. It seems like the ‘winter window fishery’ on the Upper Sac has now begun, abiet at least a couple weeks early.

And I did some alcohol consumption after my trip too :-)

    Brian;

I think our problem revolved around lateness. We caught the end of a decent hatch, and there were fish working. Just not very many, and they were in what has probably become the spookiest stretch of the river.

In terms of fishing, I think you’re largely right. Still the remnants of the October Caddis bite, and the game now shifts to the midday hatch (don’t be late!).

The lateness factor was a problem on Saturday too as I didn’t get to the river till about 1:30. There were a few October Caddis still flying around, but that hatch is fading fast and will probably be finished in another week or so……..

Hopefully the BWO hatch will continue until the end of the month after which all bets are off since then it will just be a matter of time until either 90% of access to the river gets cut off by a snowstorm, the river gets blown out by heavy rains, there is a big cold snap, etc.

    Tom,
I’ll throw the chains in for this weekend. I’m hunting the Corning area and will probably continue north on sunday. I have another pair of waders and another camera to try out…
At this rate, I wonder if Sims campground will stay open until 11/27?
    Regards,
    ML

I know the host is already gone from Simms, and besides, there’s no fish there anyway.

I got into consuming Jack at about 10am with the ol lady. Although fishing was the plan it didn’t pan out. I ended up throwing up all over myself. The misses ran into the bush all pissed off at me for ruining it all. I think Jack should be illegal or something.
