The Trout Underground Goes Capitalist (Move over Donald Trump)
By Tom Chandler on Oct 27, 2006 in Underground Entertainment
More than two years ago I started writing funky fishing reports for Chris Raine’s uppersac.com site, and I can’t guess how many words I’ve written since then.
Lately - as the traffic has risen to its current 2000 pages/day level - I’ve been looking for a way to cover the hosting costs and perhaps make a little beer money without messing up the experience for my readers.
Rather than clutter the site with annoying Google ads, I’ve become an affiliate of Sierra Trading Post.
It’s a closeout outdoor equipment retailer offering killer deals on outdoor gear, including fly fishing stuff, clothing, skis, snowshoes, boots, running shoes… you name it. I’ve sent them money for years, and never regretted it.
Here’s the Deal
When you click on a link to Sierra Trading Post from anywhere on the Trout Underground, I get a small percentage of every purchase you make on that visit.
If you go directly to the Sierra Trading Post site without clicking on a Trout Underground link, I get nothing.
Simple, eh?
It Gets Better
The Sierra Trading Post sometimes offers coupon deals which can really stretch your outdoor dollar. For example, until November 9 - if you click through one of my links - you can take an extra 15% off any order over $125
(Plus a further $10 off by using the Google checkout).
I just bought a Columbia jacket which normally retailed for $100. It was discounted to $65, cost me only $55, and the shipping was essentially free (due to the $10 Google checkout).
I’ll keep abreast of these kinds of deals and you should see them on the banner/button ads on the site.
Also, from time to time I’ll list a few especially tasty deals (always with a disclosure that I have an interest in the deal).
I want to say “thanks” in advance to everyone who shops through this site and support the Underground. The Underground’s big fun for me (and I hope you), but at some point I’d like it to pay it’s own way.
See you at the shopping mall, Tom Chandler.

Bought some stuff for the Borneo trip. ($99 for the 5 piece 6 wt travel rod and misc stuff). None of my other 20 rods will actually fit in a suitcase, even the 4 piece sage rods.

I’m not sure whether to thank you or verbally abuse you for taunting us with the Borneo trip… 8-)
Seriously, thanks. It hasn’t shown up on the report yet, but we’ll wait a day or two. Hopefully there are no glitches in this whole setup…
Thanks again!
