Almost 10. Almost Sane.

It’s almost 10:00 pm and I’ve been writing the whole damned day. (Well, I stopped when Raine called to taunt me with his fishing story.)

It’s a treat to live only minutes away from great trout fishing, but when I’m jonesing to fish and can’t, a psychologist might suggest it’s an even more painful experience than living several hours away, because ditching the work and fishing involves only a moment of weakness and eight minutes of driving.

And yeah, I realize that - over the long run - it all averages out in my favor. But not enought to stop me from whining.

Still, one’s butt should only be flat from sitting in a drift boat (not an office chair), and one’s hands should only be tired from unhooking fish all day (not typing), and I don’t qualify on either front right now.

Still, it could be worse. I could have been out trying to guide in sustained 90 mph winds like Ian Rutter, or catching trout for terminally ill friends like Bish, or even spending my days fishing sand dunes in Iraq like so many of our troops.

And the good news is something fun is going to happen over the weekend (if not sooner), and the weekend after is the Great Western Rod Gathering.

That’s where a lot of bamboo rod builders get together, swap building tips and test-cast a lot of fine rods - all with the express intent of making me fall in love with a lot of rods I can’t begin to afford.

More on the vast bamboo conspiracy next week. I’m breaking that story wide, wide open. Just you wait. It’s Pulitzer time, baby.

But here’s tonight’s Question to the Underground Readership: What’s the one thing you hate doing instead of fishing more than all the other things? (Hint: “work” isn’t a good enough answer - what part of work? If not work, then mowing, clipping, visiting, etc.)

Chemistry assignments, ironing, getting told I’m doing something wrong but the person informing me of this can’t tell me what I’m doing because they don’t know!

Memorizing sensory pathways of the central nervous system and then breaking to read about Tom being minutes away from one of my favorite rivers all the while the fallen rain dries up here in Portland. Oh, and cleaning the cat box.

Shopping with my wife on a Sat at Costco

Pulling the irrigation pump out of the river. But, a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do. Sometimes I can trick my wife into helping me by faking a back injury. (She lifts weights everyday, and is 110 lbs of solid muscle). I am 220 lbs of solid something.

Costco? On a weekend?? Scheez. I can think of no bigger purgatory.

And Chemistry? Neural pathways? I write marketing copy for a living, and there’s a reason I stick to words three syllables and shorter. Good luck.

As for rriver, he suffers immediate disqualification from this topic because he actually lives *right* on the Rogue River, meaning he’s not eligible for pity at any time. Sorry…

Dragging a dead horse out of the barn and digging a really big hole in dirt that is harder than concrete, feeding 20 dogs and 20 horses EVERY day, 120 degrees in the shop from April through August, living in a place where EVERYTHING is trying to kill something else, mostly, I feel, they’re trying to kill me.
Sorry, just realised this was turning into things I hate instead of hate doing.
    Hate doing…pressing nodes.
Did I keep all the words under three syllables?

Saturday + Costco = Shopping Hell. Being in that place on a Saturday is like being in a NASCAR race with the cars being the shopping carts of the other shoppers.

Things I hate doing are anything that means me not being on the water right now…like typing replies to blogs.
