The Trout of Another Country: Surfing the UK’s Fly Fishing Blogs

Despite the fact that American fly fishing’s roots are deeply sunk in the U.K., my fly fishing attentions were rarely focused on that side of the Atlantic.

Now that I’m an avid reader of the interesting Urban Fishing the Kelvin and the newer Tamanawis (a pair of excellent Scottish blogs), I’m taking a harder look at the fly fishing available in the U.K., and finding some interesting blogs in the process.

There’s the Windknotter, another Scottish (Ed: Update, Windknotter isn’t Scottish, but comes from “way south of the border.” My bad) fly fishing blog that still has that “new blog” smell. A sharp writer with a sense of humor, the author does a good job of bringing the experiences surrounding fishing into focus.

He endeared himself to the Underground with the following line: “But a trip without fish is rarely a trip without reward.” Rewarding reading.

Fly Fishing in South Wales is another UK fly fishing blog worth a visit. His pictures reveal a lovely, rolling landscape rich in greens and golds.

Most revealing quote? “Lovely day, no-one around, and apart from a few sheep and a horse, I was totally isolated. Perfect.” Perfect indeed. Another worthwhile blog.

Representing England is the North Country Angler, who pens passages like “The weather was gentle and still and feeling like one of those late season days when water seems to blend with sky and all of a sudden, the bank-side vegetation looks tired and overgrown.”

An impressive group of blogs. I say we steal Chris Raine’s credit cards and book a group charter for the Undergrounders right away. Until I gain access to his wallet, enjoy the UK blogs.

You can have the cards, I just can’t allow you to stay with my relatives in Edinburgh, or Norwich, nor Dunblane, nor London, nor Horndon-on-the-Hill, nor Stratford(yes, on the Avon)…….ah, and Houghton-Whyton, nor St. Ives….

    Time to renew my passport.

No access to your credit cards? Well, since you own a fly shop, your credit rating can’t be that good anyway. Now the names of those relatives…?
