Fall Weather. Almost Time for Fall Fishing?

When I left for Maine, the weather had hints of Fall, but summer was still holding up its end of the daytime temperatures.

Now it’s cold in the mornings - cold enough that I needed fleece and a hat for my early morning “get dragged around the neighborhood by Wally the Wonder Dog” venture. Frost tipped the grass in open fields.

What’s more, the evening hatches are coming back, and Trout Underground Drinking Games Director Dave Edmondson even suggested he saw a couple of October Caddis in the air.

It’s not unusual to see a few early risers in the bug department - and I’m betting we don’t see the full-blown hatch for quite some time - but if you’re of a mind to brush up on your October Caddis, visit the Trout Nut site for the basics.

In addition to the monster pumpkin-colored caddis, fall also means spooky-clear, very-low water and some exacting afternoon and evening hatches. Awesome.

Blogger Gathering in Shasta

It turns out Shasta’s going to be ground zero for a gathering of outdoor bloggers on October 6-8. The original plan was to meet at Horse Camp on Mt. Shasta, but after I pointed out there weren’t any trout up there, there’s talk of moving the camp site to a more trout-friendly environment.

This, I think, should prove interesting. Probably not as interesting as Fly Fishing Yellowstone’s take on the whole matter, but he obviously lives amidst a rich fantasy universe only slightly related to ours.

I’m still getting my feet back underneath me after Maine, but plan to fish tonight or tomorrow. As always, you’ll be the third to know…. See you on the river, Tom Chandler.
