Thursday’s Underground Entertainment

It’s Thursday. Do you know where your trout are?
We kick off this edition of Thursday’s Underground Entertainment with a visit to the Yellowstone Fly Fishing blog, only this time for an interesting “mini-rant” comparing hot rods and fly fishing. Short, and a good read.
Then we move onto toxic green sludge on the Klamath River, courtesy of the Blogfish conservation site. This story concerns the Klamath River - the focus of so many of the water wars here in the West. Good news? Not unless you love green sludge.
Most of you are familiar with Urban fly fishing on the Kelvin blog - Scotland’s fly fishing answer to Lefty Kreh and the Brown Water Boys rolled into one. We just stumbled onto another nice Scottish fly fishing blog called Tamanawis, a word we’ll try to dissect for you when our eyes stop hurting.
Finally, the newly redesigned and easily navigated MidCurrent offers a story about the growth in women’s fly fishing. There are supposedly 3.5 million women fly fishers in the US, which causes me to wonder why I fish with so many foul-smelling, beauty-impaired guys. (Probably because I’m one of them).

I don’t see that many women fly fisher’s on the river, but when I have, they show quite a bit of skill. I have seen lots of bad fly fisher’s, but never one that was a women. I belong to Southern Oregon Fly Fishers, and at least two or three of the women are certified casting instructors, in a small group of women members. The problem with most women is they just don’t know how to fake it. Hmm. Maybe I’m wrong there.

Basically, I’m not going to touch your last two sentences, even with someone else’s ten-foot pole.
Having helped out at Wayne Eng’s Women’s Fly Fishing clinics, I will say women are better listeners and far less prone to “brute force” solutions to casting problems.
I think the real reason women are better fishers than men is that they’re not distracted by thoughts of sex every 5.28 seconds. Let me illustrate with this snippet of an average male’s fishing day:
“Hmm, look at the rise form by tree. Probably a big bro… Heidi Klum is hot… wn trout. I’ll just tie on…my Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue should be here soon… a PMD parachute. OK, nice cast…Paris Hilton’s hot too… good drift, getting close… I wonder why everybody but me has seen the Paris Hilton video. I mean, why is that? It’s on the Intern… shit! Missed the fish. He must have refused it.”
You see the problem.
