Monday’s Underground Entertainment (on Sunday night)
By Tom Chandler on Jul 30, 2006 in Underground Entertainment
Just got back from the Upper Rogue. The bad news is the fishing wasn’t great. The worst news is that we got to repeat that news to the approximately 1,278 rafters and tubers who asked as they floated, spun, bobbed and drank their way by.
Of course, it’s hard to complain when you know they’re going to be there, so let’s just say the people watching was better than the fishing (pretty damned entertaining at times), and move on from there.
Schmidt’s Walkabouts blog is serving as an excellent example of how grinding conservation efforts can become. Kudos to those guys for hanging in there and trying to preserve an important part of the Green River.
From the ever-interesting Collateral Damage, an odd story about how things can go terribly, terribly wrong whenever eels and pugilism collide…
Over on the other side of the Atlantic, the mighty blogging Scots of the Kelvin River are reporting little fun (or fish) in the heat. Sounds kinda similar to here, though I think our bottom-draw dam might give us the edge. Hang on guys, it can’t stay hot forever…
Finally, from the Blogfish conservation blog comes a cuddly little story about… slime.

TC,
I wacked them Saturday evening on the middle Rogue. I will have to have you come up and fish one Saturday evening, and spend the night if you want. But, we don’t have rafters, and the low flows keep the jet skies away. Not much fishing pressure. Of course, you will have to be blindfolded until I take you to the spot(s).
Stopped in to see Chris Sunday on the way to the Bay Area. He made the reel seat for my Bamboo Quad rod from some exotic wood I brought back from Borneo that they used to make my stair railings from at my house there. It looked great. He mentioned that you were keeping bad company somewhere on the upper.

Sunday morning and afternoon on the Upper Rogue weren’t that good (see report above), but the fishing became a small part of the whole adventure. While it’s true we were overrun with rafters and tubers, you’d have to hate bikinis to deny the experience entirely…8-)
Thanks for the offer. A quick scan of the calendar suggests little free time before September 1, which is when the L&T Nancy and I head to Maine. And that’s not including whatever emergencies come up in the meantime.
Bet I’m fishing evenings close to home for a while…

I have had times during the mid to late summer where fishing the Rogue was really tough except for early or late in the day. The middle of the day was extremely tough. This seems to correspond to the heat. Sun direction also seems to really be important. Saturday I went out at 6:00 PM, but it did not get going until the sun got off the water around 7:30 or so. Once that happened, the fishing really changed.

Sure, your fishing was better, but you saw a lot fewer bikinis.
